Last summer, I wondered if I should move to a private WordPress installation instead of using WordPress.com blog service. As you see, I am still here. I asked myself so many times if it is really worth paying for a hosting provider and being able to fully customize my blog.
Okay, I don’t like my current theme at all, I would rather use modified Hemingway theme. Nonetheless, I don’t have enough time to spend designing, coding and managing a WordPress installation.
On the other hand, I would like to upload my code, my talks and my videos. I also would like to add more functionality to the dashboard and the statistics pages. I also would like to have more control such as being able to add plugins or ban people coming for certain hosts/countries (I am suffering real pain with content hijacking from someone from Dallas).
However, there are more points to discuss. Feed readers for instance. I did some calculations by hand and it seems that 64 people are frequent readers of my blog. If I move to a new host… will they update their feed subscription?
I am also concerned with Search Engines. Google, Yahoo!, etc. seem they trust WordPress.com sites and they frequently index new posts and gave them good position in their search results.
I really don’t know what I am going to do. It is very likely that I will be ranting about this next summer. :)
